ABANDONING SHIP

so now that the NSFW ban is in effect, I feel that it’s time to get off the sinking ship while i still can. So, this blog will still be up, I just won’t be updating it. I’ve saved as many of my liked posts as i can and if this blog gets banned, i won’t be complaining.

If you want to find me, you can find me on:

The Log Off Protest is officially OVER!

But we’re not done yet!

Wave 2 of the protest will pick up before the end of the year - this time with mass emails, tweets, and negative reviews of the app/website. There is no defined date yet, so make sure to follow this blog and the Twitter page ( @logoffprotest ) for updates.

Just Wave 1 on its own was a success - dropping Verizon’s stock.

image

Imaging what Wave 2 would do? Or even Wave 3 - a longer protest?!

Thank you all so much - from the bottom of my heart. Without you guys protesting, this would have not happened. Tumblr wouldn’t have heard our voices and the world wouldn’t know we do not tolerate the targetting of content creators and sex workers.

So thank you. Really.

Let’s continue making this community better - together.

Yeah, regarding that suicide hotline post I reblogged: I genuinely worry, with the number of mentally ill people on this site trying to live with and/or ease their mental illness, that some of these people are going to get tricked by Scientologist anti-psychiatry propaganda. I mean, that’s how cults lure people in; they pick people who feel there’s something missing or wrong with their lives and take advantage of them by claiming to have the solution to all their problems.

I’ve joked in the past about “What if the Church of Scientology got a Tumblr?” but there’s a part of me that’s worried that there are Scientologists on Tumblr trying to spread dangerous misinformation about mental health.

I hope that part of me is wrong.

UPDATE: So, uh, turns out a branch of $cientology technically HAS made Tumblr blogs. Several of them. If you see any blogs promoting a drug rehab facility called “Narconon”, please be aware that they ARE associated with the Church of $cientology, and they have a rather troubling history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narconon

2ND UPDATE: Same goes for any blogs promoting Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Commission_on_Human_Rights#Controversies_and_criticisms

PSA!!! FUCKING PSA!!!!!!

Left: what happens when I try to open dms (New Message does nothing); I can’t even read them. Right: when I try to go to someone’s dms from their blog.

image

Neither new things I post nor old things I post show up in the tags they’re in, even if they were before.

I can type things into replies, but it won’t actually post them.

Since it doesn’t seem this one has been encountered by many people yet, maybe reblog this so people know about it. I’m probably getting deleted though

Tumblr is shadowbanning people and they aren’t even trying to be subtle about it.

Please spread the word.

I’m glad this is spreading but simultaneously it makes it sound like the shadowban is much less severe than it is because I didn’t realize, and this shadowban is so severe I can’t even add on / tell anyone that.

All my likes, reblogs, and replies are hidden from the notes of EVERY post.

When I like or rb things it doesn’t show notes in someone’s activity / dash, except long-time followers (not sure about the exact cutoff/conditions).

If I reblogged and added something to this from a non-follower they wouldn’t even know. Check and see: my rb’s don’t even show up in the notes. So people couldn’t even find out I added something on by checking the notes either:

image

Not to mention: I’m hidden from all searches, can’t be @’d, past @’s of me are hidden from my notes, I don’t get notified when people reply to a post I replied to, my @’s don’t give notes, and every search on my blog is blanked. I can’t even ask/submit to myself even with anons, and lots more.

Oh, yeah, and: MY BLOG ISN’T EVEN MARKED NSFW. Every flagged post I’ve found was restored. But every flagged post you contest brings attention to you that risks you just getting shadowbanned randomly.

THIS is the version that should get spread around…

These are not glitches. I don’t believe it for a second. I won’t be surprised if they fuck with me at some point even though I don’t post NSFW on this blog.

For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:

  • Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
  • Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
  • Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
  • Come back on the 18th and check in

Don’t:

  • Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)
  • Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.
  • Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
  • Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
  • Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

Reblog and spread the word

REEEEE BLOG

Can I offer up a little perspective?

In terms of ad revenue, Tumblr gets paid for each set of eyeballs they can serve an ad to. It will not matter to them if they serve that on Sunday 12/16 or Tuesday 12/18. So they’ll serve fewer on Monday. No big deal - they have weeks or months to reach the eyeballs for their advertisers, so they’ll get paid.

In terms of a more important point - they are making changes because of the realization that Tumblr was being used to distribute child pornography. That’s not about freedom of expression. It’s about protecting the most innocent and vulnerable people we’ve got. So if you choose to go to other social media and spread the word that you’re protesting Tumblr’s new policies, please understand that you are telling your friends on other platforms that your ability to see naked bodies is more important than vulnerable children being protected.

I’ll be here on the 17th, even if I’m all alone.

Tumblr had ample opportunity to stop CP distribution, and they didn’t make much effort (that was visible, anyway) until the app was removed and their wallet took a hit.

Then, instead of going after the real problem, they’re taking a scorched Earth approach that’s going to harm a lot more people than it helps.

They don’t care about the safety of minors, they care about their bank account. If they cared about minors, they would have done something about the distribution of CP long before it reached this point.

it-started-over-sasunaru:

Can we talk about this scene for a moment? This is when they face Orochimaru in the Forest of Death during chunin exams. As you can see, Naruto is torn apart from team seven and is swallowed by a giant snake. Once he’s inside the snake, he struggles for a while to get out to no avail and offers the snake a rice ball he had in his bag, it falls from his hand and as soon as it touches the snake’s stomach it gets immediately digested and Naruto realizes that the same fate awaits him, then he thinks to himself “is this really how it ends?” waiting to be killed by the snake’s stomach acids. He starts remembering the people he cares about like Iruka, Konohamaru, Sakura, Kakashi, The “old man Hokage” and finally Sasuke. Now at this point, Naruto had been reminiscing about his life, accepting his faith of dying. When he thinks about Sasuke though, he remembers that he and Sasuke never really settled which one of them was better and stronger “Hey that’s right, we never did have a final showdown. We never proved who’s best! No way, can’t just leave things up in the air like that. That’s it, I’m outta here” then he proceeds to do Kage bunshin no jutsu and hundreds of Naruto’s appear inside the snake, making it explode. So what’s my point? His rivalry with Sasuke gave him the will to find a way out. Sasuke gave him the will to live. Not his crush at the time (Sakura), not Hinata, not becoming hokage, Sasuke did.

A better, more positive Tumblr

fatphobiabusters:

smitethepatriarchy:

tranarchist:

thecringeandwincefactory:

staff:

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

Jeff D’Onofrio
CEO

Oof, no more dick on Tumblr I guess.

image

So wait, they can ban nudity to make more people feel comfortable on Tumblr, but not nazis? Am I getting this right?

“You should be free to talk openly about sex and sexuality, but we are banning all sex on Tumblr, and all nudity, and all adult content, and-”

Go to hell, Tumblr. You’re not helping anyone by doing this.

Get rid of the child porn. The pedophiles. The abusers. The rapists. The Nazis and KKK members.

But getting rid of innocent users making and sharing adult content for adults and utilizing every available avenue to to make sure minors are not exposed is NOT okay.

Fuck this update. Fuck this site.

I hate this. This is not okay.
